“Confronting the HIV/AIDS Epidemic: Policy Responses in South Africa and India”
The Scholar Ship Research Institute and the University of Cape Town will host an international workshop comparing India and South Africa’s efforts to mitigate the socio-economic impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The workshop is scheduled for February 2008 in Cape Town, South Africa. Participants will also focus on how lessons learned by Indian CSOs, governments and the private sector organizations can inform similar initiatives in other Asian and African countries.

“ASEAN Disaster Management: Enhancing Multilateral Approaches
Across the Emergency Response Spectrum”
The Scholar Ship Research Institute and the National University of Singapore will host an international workshop to examine regional approaches to disaster management in Southeast Asia. Scheduled for January 2008 in Bangkok, Thailand, the workshop will consider how organizations like ASEAN can enhance multilateral coordination in responding to natural and/or man-made disasters. Participants will also focus on lessons learned in the wake of the 2005 Tsumani and their applicability to New Security Threats, including disease and forced migration.

“Solidarity and Stewardship: Interfaith Approaches to Global Challenges”
In June 2007 The Scholar Ship Research Institute and Al-Akhwayn University organised a workshop to examine interfaith approaches to issues including migration, conflict resolution, environmental stewardship, human development and interfaith awareness. Aimed at encouraging constructive dialogue across cultural and religious divides, the institute’s inaugural workshop drew distinguished academics and spiritual leaders from several diverse scholarly disciplines and faith traditions.

“Antiquities in Conflict Zones”
On 7 May 2007, the Institute and the Museum of London hosted the United Kingdom premier of ‘The Rape of Europa’. The groundbreaking film by ICON UK tells the epic story of the systematic theft, deliberate destruction and miraculous survival of Europe’s art treasures during the Third Reich and World War II. Institute Director Ravinder Bhatia chaired the subsequent discussion on the protection of antiquities and cultural heritage in contemporary conflict zones. Panelists included Oliver Urquhart Irvine (British Library), Dr. Irving Finkel (curator in the Department of the Ancient Near East at the British Museum) and Professor Jack Lohman (ICOM UK / Museum of London).
