In addition to its on-board research programme, The Scholar Ship Research Institute hosts international workshops for leading scholars and specialists from around the world. These workshops provide participants with an opportunity to exchange ideas and build partnerships with colleagues from different countries and disciplines. Many workshops take place aboard The Scholar Ship itself, giving our faculty and students valuable exposure to the latest debates and learning in their respective fields.

SEPTEMBER 2008 | LISBON, PORTUGAL
"Human Rights and the Development of Multilateral Judicial Institutions in Europe"
The Scholar Ship Research Institute will host an international law workshop examining human rights and the development of multilateral judicial institutions in Europe. Discussants will focus on human rights advocacy before European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), as well as the enforcement of international humanitarian law including the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTFY) and the newly constituted International Criminal Court (ICC). The workshop aims to integrate research themes from political theory, international law and human rights education, with the goal of enhancing collaboration between theorists, practitioners and educators.

In March 2008, Dr. Stepanova joined The Scholar Ship as a Global Scholar , hosting a series of onboard lectures and seminars entitled "Terrorism as a Tactic of Non-State Actors." She is on a leave of absence from the Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO), Russian Academy of Sciences, where since 2001, she has headed a Research group on unconventional security threats at The Center for International Security.

"Oceanographic Research Probes Launch from The Scholar Ship"
Staff members of The Scholar Ship Research Institute launched 23 temperature probes, or XBTs (expendable bathythermographs, which measure temperature and depth), off the ship en route to South Africa. Students also participated in each deployment.
“The XBT launch was a great opportunity for students to participate in the important research taking place on the vessel every day,” says Dana Vukajlovich, research outreach coordinator onboard The Scholar Ship.

“Confronting the HIV/AIDS Epidemic: Policy Responses in South Africa and India”
The Scholar Ship Research Institute and the University of Cape Town will host an international workshop comparing India and South Africa’s efforts to mitigate the socio-economic impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The workshop is scheduled for February 2008 in Cape Town, South Africa. Participants will also focus on how lessons learned by Indian CSOs, governments and the private sector organizations can inform similar initiatives in other Asian and African countries.
25-26 JANUARY 2008 | BANGKOK, THAILAND
“ASEAN Disaster Management: Enhancing Multilateral Approaches
Across the Emergency Response Spectrum”
The Scholar Ship Research Institute and the National University of Singapore will host an international workshop to examine regional approaches to disaster management in Southeast Asia. Scheduled for January 2008 in Bangkok, Thailand, the workshop will consider how organizations like ASEAN can enhance multilateral coordination in responding to natural and/or man-made disasters. Participants will also focus on lessons learned in the wake of the 2005 Tsumani and their applicability to New Security Threats, including disease and forced migration.
