Environmental Science - Oceanography
The Oceanography programme examines the state of the marine environment. Research is conducted onboard The Scholar Ship itself, with students and faculty using the vessel as a Ship of Opportunity from which to measure key research parameters over much of their global journey. Comprehensive measurements of the ocean and air-sea interface are made throughout each four month cruise. Dovetailing with onshore and offshore teaching, these efforts contribute to both educational outreach and longitudinal studies including the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS).
Research Initiatives
The institute’s current complement of instrumentation and deployables includes a UK NOC Ferrybox for continuous sampling of ocean water temperature, oxygen content, fluorescence and turbidity; SAHFOS plankton collectors; expendable bathythermographs to measure the temperature profile of the ocean; Argo floats to create 3D profiles of temperature and salinity; and surface drifters to map the ocean currents. Researchers and students are also conducting a cetacea and seabird survey.
