Environmental Science - Coastal Management

The Coastal Management programme will investigate how pressures from land based activities on coastal areas affect natural resources, as well as the influence of these factors on environmental, social and economic services in coastal communities. We will conduct surveys in The Scholar Ship’s ports of call during each voyage, thereby building up a long term data set. The objective is to assess integrated approaches to coastal area and river basin management, focusing on biodiversity, habitat, fisheries and coastal tourism.

Research Initiatives

Initial research will focus on the collection of water and sediment samples from the offshore coastal shelves, chemical surveys of fresh water sources, habitat characterization and the examination of microorganisms in both hard and soft substrates.
