Environmental Science - Atmospheric Science

The Atmospheric Sciences programme supports global climate change modeling activities. The Scholar Ship serves as a voluntary observing vessel providing data to the World Meteorological Organization and several national meteorological offices. The characterisation of aerosols helps inform understanding of radiative forcing processes taking place in the atmosphere, along with associated pollution effects and the possible impact on human health.

Research Initiatives

Students and researchers are deploying instrumentation in partnership with the UK Meteorological Office to look at the physics of atmosphere. Working with the Faculty of Environmental Sciences at Fudan University, we are deploying an ozone analyser, aerosol sampler and rainwater sampler. Planned instrumentation includes SO2 and NOX analysers and a passive Differential Optical Absorption Spectrometer.
