January 2009 voyage adds Maldives, Greece and Croatia to updated itinerary
The January 2009 voyage will bring The Scholar Ship to the compelling countries of the Maldives Islands and Greece, as well as to Croatia and its neighboring Eastern European countries. These ports provide rich cultures from which to draw experiential field programs and meaningful independent travel experiences. A brief ‘ambassadorial’ stop in Oslo, Norway will provide students the chance to interact with local university students in this world-class city before concluding the voyage in Amsterdam.

S07 voyage alumni travel from afar to welcome ship as it concludes J08 voyage in Amsterdam
They came in from Paris, Prague, Portland, and from as far away as Hong Kong. They were a small contingent of The Scholar Ship’s inaugural alumni class who couldn’t wait any longer to re-unite and reminisce on the decks that became home during the September 2007 voyage. More than 20 in all. With Amsterdam as the backdrop to this first official reunion, the program’s promise to foster lifelong friendships was evidenced throughout the weekend-long revelry that ensued. Indication also arose quickly that The Scholar Ship has already proven to work as a platform for global networking. “I am thrilled to report that I landed a significant software development project in the UK as a direct result of my studies aboard The Scholar Ship,” said Michal Bachman, a Czech student based in Prague. For those alums who missed out on the festivities, planning is already in the works for future alumni reunions around the world!

The Scholar Ship partners with AIESEC, world’s largest student organization

The Scholar Ship recently announced a new partnership with AIESEC, the world’s largest student organization serving as an international platform for young people to discover and develop their potential so as to have a positive impact in society. The 60-year-old organization, internationally headquartered in Rotterdam, has a presence at over 1100 universities in more than 100 countries and territories.
The Scholar Ship and AIESEC will collaborate to share resources and work toward accomplishing the organizations’ common goals, which include study abroad, global leadership training, and intercultural development. The Scholar Ship will introduce a grant program for AIESEC members and will collaborate with AIESEC to develop a "work and learn" program to provide international internships to students who spend a semester aboard The Scholar Ship.
“Our decision to partner with The Scholar Ship is based on the fact that we have complimentary learning experiences to offer to the youth of today, as well as many common values, among them commitment to cultural diversity, global citizenship, and social change. AIESEC members will benefit from the unique study abroad experience The Scholar Ship program offers,” says Rishabh Chopra, spokesperson for AIESEC. “This new partnership further strengthens our mission to host internationally diverse students who strive to be open-minded, culturally sensitive and who are proactive change agents,” says John Larkin, regional director of The Scholar Ship.

Spotlight: Shanghai, China
The two Chinese characters in the name "Shanghai" mean "up, on, or above" and "sea." There are numerous interpretations of the name, but a Mandarin reading suits China’s largest port city perfectly: “go into the sea.”
The Scholar Ship arrives in the “Paris of the East” on the 6th of December 2008. Between academic field programs and shore excursions, students will witness firsthand what Lonely Planet describes as “…the yin of revolutionary zeal…balanced by the yang of economic pragmatism.”
“Shanghai is a scintillating city swirling with rapid cultural change. Since market restrictions were lifted, it has embraced the forces of business and design and rewritten its rule book shaping a fresh, new city that is sophisticated, innovative and living a life it has never lived before… Shanghai is the hotspot of modern China; a cosmopolitan city buzzing with the concept of 'lifestyle revolution,' showcased in the architectural temples of art, fine dining and contemporary urban living on the Bund.” (© 2008 Lonely Planet Publications)
Shore Excursion Profile - Hangzhou - Heaven on Earth
Travel three hours through lovely countryside to arrive at Hangzhou, known as "the most noble city and the best that is in the world," according to Marco Polo. Hangzhou is considered one of the most beautiful places in China. "Above is heaven, below is Hangzhou" is a famous Chinese saying. Tours include a visit to the Longjing Tea Plantation, in a region that has been producing tea for over 1500 years. The climate here makes it perfect to produce some of the most delicious and healthiest herbal tea in the country. We will also take a lift to the top of Chenghuangge, which provides a panoramic view of the famous West Lake. After lunch along Old Street, we will visit a Chinese traditional hospital, where we will meet with doctors and patients who are utilizing Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, cupping, and other practices common in the region.

Moments of Inspiration
An excerpt from Brittany Meynardie's blog, “Taking on the World”
Posted 3 January 2008
It’s not the End but the Beginning…
“Remember, I said that this was the beginning, not the end. I have the chance to start from scratch on a lot of things. Though I will miss the past, and terribly so at that, I will rise to the occasion to meet my destiny head-on. When people ask what The Scholar Ship experience was like for me, all I can say now is that what I was before, I am no more. This journal will no longer be a daily account of my life, but rather, a look into my adjustment to the real world and the application of everything I have learned about it into my life. I hope that people continue to read this blog, even if only on a few occasions. It is my way of sharing my experience with whomever wishes to hear them. Right now I leave with a list of things to remember and ambitions to succeed:
1. Never forget the people I’ve met and the places I’ve seen;
2. Build a school in Ecuador;
3. Start my non-profit;
4. See more of the world (and take people with me); and
5. Until then…”
Brittany is an undergraduate student hailing from Florida, USA, who studied in the Conflict Studies Learning Circle aboard the September 2007 voyage.
