Glossary

Following are terms used frequently throughout our website. We hope you find these definitions useful. If there are additional words you think should be included here, please submit them to us.

Academic Field Program Organized educational experiences involving student groups in activities exploring social, political, environmental and business issues during port calls. Three academic field programs, included in the program fee, are required of every student.

Academic Stewards The seven universities around the world that contribute to The Scholar Ship's programming, oversee the quality of its academic offerings and ensure that it adheres to the most rigorous standards.

Consortium The Consortium of Academic Stewards, above.

Core subject A required academic subject. Undergraduates study two core subjects, postgraduates study one.

Graduate Advanced studies beyond the baccalaureate degree. Also, a person pursuing these studies.

Independent travel Travel during port calls planned by students themselves or with the assistance of our Port Program office.

IRCs Assisting the academic teaching staff is a group of Intercultural Residential Counselors whom are trained in intercultural management. IRCs are students’ primary resource for a healthy and enjoyable living experience. They work with students to co-coordinate residential and cultural activities designed to support students’ personal well-being and academic success.

Learning Circle An academic “home” in The Scholar Ship program, similar to a university department or division, which organizes the exploration of themes in an interdisciplinary area of study; also a group of students, teaching and other staff who explore a set of related themes through classroom study, planned activities onboard and in port cities, and informal interaction; and a set of related subjects (classes) addressing themes that meet the programmatic objectives set forth by The Scholar Ship's Consortium of Academic Stewards.

Onboard life All aspects of life aboard The Scholar Ship outside the classroom.

Postgraduate Same as "graduate." Advanced studies beyond the baccalaureate degree. Also, a person pursuing these studies.

Shore Excursion An organized tour available at each port. Students may choose to go on shore excursions at their own expense to sites outside the port cities in the countries visited by The Scholar Ship.

Subject A semester-long series of classes or courses on one topic aboard The Scholar Ship.

Transnational Reaching beyond and transcending national boundaries. Aboard The Scholar Ship, "transnational" refers to a way of learning, relating and problem-solving across social, cultural, political and economic borders as well.

TSS Initials for The Scholar Ship used as an abbreviation.

Undergraduate Noun: A college or university student who has not yet earned a baccalaureate degree. Adjective: Relating to undergraduates, as undergraduate subjects.
